Retirement Seminar. A full-day seminar for officers who will be retiring in the next few years providing an overview of useful information will be offered on Friday, June 13 from 8:30 am to 4:30. Sign up is available when you register. There is no charge for this session.

The Shepherd’s Table is an independent nonprofit organization that serves free lunch to anyone desiring a meal. The offices are located in downtown Raleigh in the basement of the Church of the Good Shepherd. It is within walking distance of the Raleigh Convention Center. http://shepherds-table.org/
The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. The American Red Cross is the nation’s largest blood collection organization, supplying approximately 40 percent of the blood and blood products used in our country (taken from website http://www.redcross.org/what-we-do ) A blood drive to donate blood to The American Red Cross will be held in Raleigh Convention Center. A person from the Bone Marrow Registry will also be present to provide information about becoming a bone marrow donor.
Healing with CAARE is a grassroots non-profit organization located in Durham, North Carolina, that promotes a holistic and community approach to health. They provide a wide variety of services that help treat not only the medical roots of chronic diseases, but also the social and human factors that contribute to health deficits. CAARE seeks to address disparities in health care access (http://caareinc.org). Over the past two years, NCCOA has partnered with this organization to conduct a Veteran’s Health Fair, and provide furnishing for the newly created Veteran’s dorms that are located on site. Many NCCOA officers have volunteered at CAARE to support various initiatives. It will be a wonderful opportunity for officers to give back and to see the remarkable work being provided by this organization. Transportation will be provided.
Volunteer Opportunities at the Conference
The Logistics Committee for the 2014 USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium is seeking the help of volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks onsite during the conference. Duties are time-limited and straight-forward. For Junior Officers it is a great opportunity to showcase your talents and expand your network. For Senior Officers, it is an excellent way to give back! Your help will ensure a smooth-running conference and a positive experience for everyone! All volunteers will receive a letter of appreciation. If you will be at the Symposium please take a moment to review the needs and sign up during registration.
Surgeon General's 5K Run/Walk
The Surgeon General's 5K Run/Walk and Annual Physical Fitness Test (APFT) will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at Anderson Point Park Greenway in Raleigh. Buses will be available to transport participants to and from the location. Buses will run continuous loops from the Raleigh Convention Center and back beginning at 5:30 am.
Participation is free and each participant will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the male and female runner with the top overall time and the top time in each age category (exclusive of overall winners).
Annual Physical Fitness Test (APFT)
The APFT will begin at approximately 6:00 am. The Run/Walk will start at 6:45 am. If you plan to participate in the APFT, please indicate that when you sign up. Please print out and bring with you a copy of the APFT form below. A towel also is recommended as grass may be wet.
